Ferris resident Jackie Kimbrell, 71, planned to live in her home until the day she died, which is why the city's Tuesday deadline for her to vacate the property was such a jolt.
"This is my home, this is my everything," she said. "It's just very difficult to think they can take my house and bulldoze it."
Kimbrell said the home was built around 1912. She's lived there since 1981. She said some of her most prized memories feature the home as a backdrop.
But the city has deemed it an unsafe eyesore: A municipal judge ruled the house will be demolished Sept. 7 if its roof, paint and wiring isn't repaired. A wrap-around porch must also be replaced.
"I have tried to comply but I just haven't come up with the money to do the things that needed to be done," Kimbrell said. "I know I have enough money to buy paint, but I know I can't put a roof on it."
Her youngest grandson Joey Cruz, 26, is hard at work getting the home up to code.
"This house means everything to my grandma," he said. "I mean, if you take this, you're taking her life. I'm being honest with you."
Ferris mayor Richard Barrett said Kimbrell's home doesn't meet city standards and is not structurally safe. Earlier this year, a municipal judge ruled that the home would be destroyed if it wasn't brought up to code.
"It's been several years that we have been working with the family," Barrett said. "Even if she were to stay in this particular home, there is a concern for her safety."
Kimbrell said she was recently diagnosed with a heart condition, and works six days per week to cover her bills and expenses. The 71-year-old is struggling to find the time and money to meet the demands.
"I'm not sure how long the house will stay standing," Barrett said.
Kimbrell said she has been offered no money from the city, and that the home is paid off and she is up to date on her taxes. If the home is demolished, Barrett expects the city will confiscate the land.
"When I look at the house, what I see, is how it would be if we got done," Kimbrell said. "That sounds crazy, but that's what I see when I look at it." -
